Terry Hamilton

Principal

Terry Hamilton is from New Zealand and this is his 15th year as Principal of HIS. This year he will also be teaching History and Theory of Knowledge. He has been teaching for many years and has been in international schools since 1980 in Portugal, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Indonesia, New Zealand and now Hanoi. He took his degrees at Canterbury University, Christchurch, New Zealand and holds a B.A and M.A in History and Philosophy. He is very active in leading CIS based accreditation teams which this year will take him to Australia. He is married, is a father and a grandfather.

 


 

Sean Gibb

Vice Principal, Secondary 

Sean is the Head of Secondary School. He was born in New Zealand, raised in Australia, and has taught internationally for over ten years. Sean holds a Bachelor of Secondary Education and a Masters in Educational Leadership and Management. With a passion for international education, Sean's experience with the IB spans the roles of teacher, programme coordinator, researcher, and national association board member. Sean enjoys hiking, climbing, running, surfing, and snowboarding; anything that involves exploring the natural world.

Vice Principal, Elementary

 Lisa Hughes is the Head of Elementary at HIS. Originally from Wales, Lisa has been teaching for 18 years in different countries; starting in London then on to the International School circuit in Finland, Paris, Istanbul, Kazakhstan and now Vietnam.  Lisa has a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Masters in Education. Lisa leads a balanced life and enjoys supporting students with sports, Zumba classes, learning new languages and travelling.

 

 

Volker Schlieske

English and IB Diploma Coordinator
 

Volker, who comes from Germany, is the IB DP Coordinator of HIS. He studied English and German and acquired two teaching degrees for Secondary Level Education. An experienced IB DP Coordinator, Volker has also been teaching for many years at International Schools around the world. He teaches Psychology and Theory of Knowledge in IB DP at HIS. Volker has visited numerous countries around the world and enjoys travelling with his wife. He plays the guitar in his spare time and is also an avid “Schalke” football fan..

 

 Daniel Suarez

Middle Years and IGCSE Coordinator


Daniel is from Venezuela and has over 30 years of experience in international education, first as a student and more recently as a teacher and programme coordinator. He has worked in Guatemala; Ecuador; Venezuela; Germany and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Daniel has 16 years of experience with the IB as a teacher, examiner and coordinator. He has returned to Vietnam with his wife Louise and six-year-old daughter Elena. In his spare time, Daniel enjoys all things related to football, reading, travelling South East Asia in search of the perfect beach and spending time with his lovely family.


 

Vani Veikoso

PYP Coordinator/Grade 5 

Vani Veikoso comes from the beautiful islands of Fiji. She is married with three gorgeous children and three step-children. This is her first year at HIS and she is the Grade 5 Teacher and PYP Coordinator. Vani has been teaching internationally since 1993 in international schools in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Colombia, Qatar, Bahamas, South Korea and Nauru. Interestingly enough Vani also taught at HIS 13 years ago. She has also taught in her home country of Fiji. Vani holds a Master of Education and Bachelor of Education Studies degree obtained at the University of Southern Queensland in Australia, in addition to a Certificate in TESL and Certificate in Primary Education from Fiji. Vani enjoys reading and writing and is passionate about school improvement. She contributes to school improvement internationally as an active CIS school visitor team member.

Ali Waugh is the school's Guidance Counsellor, assisting students with their career pathways, university entrance applications, as well as providing support for students' social and emotional needs. Ali has been teaching in the EAL Department at HIS since 2007.

 

 

 

Leo Dyar

Coordinator of Humanities

Business Management, Economics

Leo Dyar teaches Economics and Business Management and is the Coordinator of Humanities at HIS. He hails from Ireland, where he received his teacher training and subsequently, became a school Principal in his native place for many years. After sojourns in international schools in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Romania, he arrived at Hanoi International School where he has been contentedly teaching our wonderful students, for the past five years. He enjoys active participation in local football leagues and relaxes to good music, sudoku and literature.  

 

 

 

Brandon Gauthier

Geography

Brandon Gauthier comes from London, Canada and has been in Vietnam since the new Millennium. He has a BA in Anthropology and Sociology from Carleton University in Ottawa and GDTL from Charles Darwin University in Australia. He has been at HIS since 2003 and has taught various subjects including EAL, elementary PE, biology, history but most notably geography. He has a passion for human geography and enjoys taking his students out of the classroom to explore various environmental issues around Vietnam, in hopes of making his students become Geo-literate in the process. He is married and has one daughter who currently is in Grade 6.  

 

 

Ms. Cara Glintmeyer

Mathematics

.Cara Glintmeyer is from Nelson in New Zealand. This year she will be teaching Mathematics from grade 8 to 12. She has been teaching mathematics for many years in New Zealand and this is her first year living and teaching in Hanoi.

Outside school she is a avid sportsperson playing tennis, running, biking and paddleboarding. In her spare time she also enjoys doing puzzles; sudoku, kakuro and her latest challenge of pixel puzzles.

Mathematics and Design

Ms.Kia comes from The U.S. and is excited to begin her 2nd year in Hanoi with the students of Hanoi International School! She has a BS in Mathematics and an MS in Applied Statistics.She has had the pleasure of working with Secondary students for the past 9 years. She is as equally passionate about educational technology as she is about Math. Her students enjoy participating in lectures and activities via their laptops and tablets; they also have ample opportunities to explore mathematical concepts by working collaboratively.She is told that her love for math is contagious! She often incorporates art, music, and technology into her lessons to excite students and give them hands-on, real-world math experiences. Ms. Kia is looking forward to teaching and cultivating relationships with the students of HIS.

Secondary English A 

Carina is the Language A Head of Department. She was born in Manila, studied, lived and worked in Europe and Asia, and has been teaching for many years at various schools worldwide in both Secondary School and IB DP as Head of the English Department. Carina holds a B.A. Cum Laude in European Languages and Post Grad in English and American Studies. At HIS, she teaches English A Language and Literature in IB DP and at Secondary Level. Carina speaks three languages fluently, has a passion for books and music, and also loves travelling with her husband..

   

 
Rashi Garg

Sciences, IBDP Chemistry
Rashi Garg teaches science to secondary school and is back teaching at HIS after some years on family leave. She has a Bachelor of Science degree and a post graduate diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Delhi, India. She has been involved in a number of teaching and professional development programs. She believes her many years of teaching experience have helped her to develop a set of beliefs about how she can best help students learn and grow.

Sciences, IBDP Chemistry

Dung T. Do teaches chemistry for Grade 11 and grade 12. After seven years in the United States, Dung came back to Hanoi and became chemistry teacher at HIS this year. Dung enjoys sharing the passion and the curiosity for chemistry with HIS students. Dung received a PhD in Chemistry from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US and also worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Indiana University at Bloomington, US. In his free time, Dung enjoys playing soccer and Tennis.

Secondary Technology Integrator

Dan Slaughter teaches Economics, Business and Humanities to students in the secondary school. His favorite thing about teaching at HIS is the wonderful students he gets to interact with everyday.  Dan has a Bachelor's degree in Finance from Boise State University, an MBA from the University of Hawaii and a Master's in Education from The College of New Jersey. He is keen on finding ways to effectively integrate technology into his lessons and has a certificate in Educational Technology. He is also an Examiner for IB Business. In his free time Dan enjoys spending time with his wife and two young children. He also enjoys playing sports, investing in stocks and traveling.

Vietnamese Language and Literature

Vu Thi Thu Huong teaches Vietnamese language and literature at Elementary and Secondary level, as well as being the coordinator of Vietnamese department. She has a Bachelor's degree in teaching languages and a Master's degree in Linguistics from Hanoi National University. She has been teaching Vietnamese for 19 years including a position at Hanoi National University. This is her fifth school  year at HIS. She likes teaching very much. That’s why she has chosen to be a teacher. She is married and has a daughter and a son. She likes reading, watching movies and especially enjoys cooking and travelling. 

 

 

Antoine Kubler

Antoine teaches French and will help developing drama activities in Secondary. He originally comes from beautiful Strasbourg, France, but spent most of the last twelve years abroad, first studying in Norway and then teaching in Hungary, Louisiana, Bavaria and most recently, Kenya. Antoine also taught for three years in Ho Chi Minh City. His background includes bachelors in Law, Ethnology, Literature, and Education. 
On his spare time, Antoine loves theatre, travels, photography, and he is really looking forward enjoying the Vietnamese life again.


 

 

Rosa Carbajal

Secondary Mathematics

 Rosa Carbajal is teaching Math at the Secondary level.  She is from Los Angeles, California where she earned her Bachelor of Science and Master in Education.  She taught for six years in the US, mostly as a math teacher before venturing abroad. She taught in London and an international school in Riga before arriving in Hanoi. 

 Outside of school she enjoys traveling and exploring her local area.  She also enjoys running, reading, cycling, snowboarding, watching films, going to the theatre and knitting.

 

 

 

Grant Chamberlain

Grant Chamberlain is Australian and has been living abroad for the past 16 years, teaching and performing music in the Palestinian Territories, USA, Sri Lanka, Kenya and Tanzania. He completed a Masters Degree in Music at the Australian National University, Canberra and has done other post-graduate studies at University of Maryland and the University of New England, Australia. When he is not teaching, Grant loves running, playing basketball, jazz music and spending time with his wife and two children. 

 


 

 

Chad Taylor

CAS Coordinator and Humanities
 

Chad Taylor, who has been working here at H.I.S. for 6 years, is currently the CAS Coordinator for Secondary, and teaches Humanities as well as Global Perspectives.  Born in Malawi, but raised in Western Canada, Chad has been teaching various age groups for the past 20 years in Canada, Japan and Vietnam. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Conservation Biology and an MA in Education, with a focus on Leadership and Management. Chad’s hobbies include reading, writing poetry, gaming, travelling and cooking. He has resided in Vietnam for nearly 15 years, and has a daughter in Kindergarten.  Chad has a huge love of experiential, life-long learning, and life in general!

 

 

 

Michael Clifford

Michael Clifford is the new IT coordinator. Hailing from England, Michael has been using technology in his teaching for the last 19 years in many countries including Spain, Mexico, Switzerland and Vietnam, where he has been living for the past 13 years. Currently, Michael is studying an online Masters to add to his degree in Communication, and teaching qualifications from England, Spain and Australia. A keen hispanophile, in his free time, he likes to dabble with the guitar, is a keen appreciator of the arts and an enthusiastic player and coach of Gaelic Football.

Sciences and Environmental Systems and Societies

Jeffrey is the Head of the Science Department. He has been in the academe for 11 years and 8 years of which were spent in an international education setting (IB and IGCSE). He is from the Philippines and he first started teaching in his country. He then explored working in different international schools in Malaysia, Israel and now in Vietnam. Jeffrey holds a Bachelor of Science major in Biology (cum laude), a Master of Marine Management and a Professional Teaching Certificate. He is an IB Diploma Examiner for the last 5 years. Jeffrey enjoys a balanced life and is very interested in travelling the world and experiencing different cultures and people. He is passionate about sports development and has been coaching in HIS for the last 2 years. 

 

 

 

Amy Hanson

Coordinator for the Arts, Coordinator MRISA Cultural/Arts Exchange

Amy Hanson is from Seattle, Washington. This is her first year at HIS she is looking forward to teaching grades 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12 visual arts. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education as an Arts Specialist and a Master's of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Buffalo State New York. This is her 19th year teaching art. Before coming to HIS, Amy has taught in Shanghai, China, Kuwait, and in the US. She enjoys art, photography, traveling, yoga, kayaking, rock climbing and snowboarding.

Ceri has been a teacher for 15 years. She has lived and worked in seven different countries. Ceri enjoys sharing her passion for the sciences with her wonderful students at H.I.S. She feels a strong connection with her students having been educated internationally in Germany, England, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Ceri has a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from the University of Otago and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching from Dunedin. PE and Athletics

Andy is from Nelson, New Zealand. He graduated from Otago University with a Bachelor of Physical Education and a Bachelor of Teaching. Andy has 9 years experience teaching secondary PE and coaching a variety of sports in New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. He is in his third year at HIS and is passionate about transforming the middle years HPE curriculum, as well as continuing to develop HIS Tiger's sport. In his spare time he enjoys being involved in the Hanoi Dragons Rugby Club as a player/coach, relaxing with friends and travelling to experience different cultures. 

 

 

Shiori Ozawa

Japanese

Shiori has taught in Public school in Japan and in international schools in other Asian countries during more than ten years of her teaching career. At HIS, she teaches IB Japanese Literature and IGCSE as well as teaching Japanese as a weekly extracurricular activity for elementary students. She is a devoted teacher, and three of her students have received “Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards" in all-Asia category and in Vietnam category.

Vicki has been teaching internationally for ten years and, along with teaching grade 6 Language Acquisition and TOK, joins us at HIS as the Student Support Services Coordinator for MYP and student council liaison. Vicki has extensive experience with the IB as a DP examiner, a workshop leader, an author, and a senior reviewer for the 'Building Quality Curriculum' team. Vicki has also contributed to the development of curriculum material for the IB. Originally from the UK, Vicki lives in Hanoi with her husband and two children. 

 

 

                      

 

Rupashree Dutta Majumdar

Rupashree is from India. She has stayed and taught in different parts of India and this is her second year at HIS. She holds a Bachelors degree in Geography from the University of Kolkata, India and a Masters degree in Education from the University of Pune, India. This year, she will be teaching English Language Acquisition from Grades 6-9 and English as a Second Language in Grade 10.

Rupashree has a keen interest in gardening. She likes travelling and meeting people. Reading, music and movies takes up much of her spare time.Being a mother of two boys, she enjoys the company of children.

 

 

 

Le Thi Lan Anh

Lan Anh teaches Vietnamese at Elementary and Secondary level. She has a Master’s degree in Linguistics from Hanoi National University. Yoon Hee Ha

 Yoon Hee is a Korean teacher for grades 8 - 12. She has been teaching for more than 10 years and has a Bachelor's degree in Literature and Creative Writing, and in Counseling. She has had three children herself, and all of them spent more than half of their lives in Vietnam with her.

Adam Hayton

Grade 4A Teacher

Adam Hayton is from Perth, Australia and this is his first year in Hanoi. He is eager to discover the many different parts of Vietnamese culture, but is especially excited to investigate and cook Vietnamese food! Adam is looking forward to leading Grade 4A on their learning journey this year after spending the last four years teaching in Moscow, Russia. He holds a Bachelor of Education from Curtin University, Perth, Australia, where he also spent three years studying Psychology. Grade 3 Teacher

Currie is originally from Portland, Oregon, on the west coast of the United States but received his Bachelor's Degree from Boston College.  He has been living and teaching in SE Asia for the last 6 years and this is his second posting in Vietnam.  He previously spent two years in Huế, in central Vietnam.  Currie has also lived and taught in Saudi Arabia, Myanmar and most recently Cambodia.  In his free time Currie enjoys travelling and exploring new cultures, rock climbing, motorbiking and spending time with friends and family.   

 

 

Pushpa Waters

Grade 4P Teacher

 Pushpa Waters is a Malaysian who has been living and teaching in Vietnam for more than 10 years. She received her teacher training in Malaysia. Pushpa has more than 15 years of experience teaching elementary students. This is Pushpa’s sixth year teaching at HIS for this term. She has taught at HIS prior to this. Her husband is from New Zealand and they have two lovely daughters. Pushpa enjoys travelling, exploring New Zealand and spending time on the beaches of Malaysia with her family.

James Is from the UK and is in his 5th Year living and teaching in Hanoi. Previously he taught in Shanghai. James is passionate about inquiry based learning and enjoys the close family atmosphere at HIS. Kate Garcia

Grade 1 Teacher

Kate is from the Philippines and has a Bachelor of Science in Child Development. She has been teaching for ten years and joins the team with great motivation. Prior to moving overseas to pursue international teaching, she taught English to Foreigners in a private school in the Philippines. In the past five years she has been an Early Years Teacher at an IB School in Ningbo, China. This year, she is very happy to be part of the HIS community and is enthusiastic to embrace the Vietnamese culture. Kate manages a dynamic balance between her companionship and love for children she teaches, as she plays and learns alongside them. During her free time, she finds relaxation in baking, drawing, dancing and traveling.

 

   

Rebecca Weitzel

Pre-K and Kindergarten Teacher

 Rebecca Weitzel is teaching Pre K - K at HIS this year. She is from New York State in the United States of America. She has done a lot of traveling and has a lot of experience working with children.  Previously, she was teaching in Kuwait and this will be her first year teaching here in Vietnam. Rebecca received her Bachelors Degree in Education and following that she received her Master's degree in Literacy from St. Bonaventure University in the USA. Rebecca is very excited to be here and is looking forward to the journey ahead.

Elementary Coordinator for EAL/SEN

 Laura Gray is from London, England where she taught for 3 years before deciding to take her teaching career overseas.  Laura’s first destination was Thailand and this was when she fell in love with Asia and teaching English as a Foreign Language.  She returned to the UK as an EAL specialist and after 3 years accepted a post working with local schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Min City, helping to raise standards of English Education. This year Laura is Coordinator for Extra Learning Support in the Elementary School.  Her enthusiastic personality and passion for teaching and learning is reflected in her whole approach to school life. In her spare time Laura enjoys riding her bicycle, travelling around Vietnam and spending time with family and friends.

   

  

Keiko Shofu

Elementary EAL/SEN 

Keiko Shofu is from Osaka, Japan, and this is her first year at HIS. She will teach SEN and EAL in the elementary school. Ms. Keiko has been teaching for 8 years, and before coming to HIS she taught in Honduras as a 3rd grade classroom teacher and in Guatemala as a SEN teacher. She holds a B.A. in English Literature from Baika Women’s University, Osaka, Japan and a B.A. in Early Childhood Education from University of Northern Iowa, Iowa, USA. She also took her degree at University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada and holds a M.Ed in Special Education. She loves traveling and eating! She is very excited to be a part of HIS family!

 

  

Yana Bondarenko

Elementary EAL/SEN & Library

Yana Bondarenko is from Kazakhstan. She is very happy to see Hanoi as her new home. She has always wanted to be a teacher and really enjoy working with children. She has been teaching for 10 years, 4 of them at the PYP school in Astana, Kazakhstan. Her previous teaching experience has been teaching Years One, Two and being ELS teacher. This is her second year of teaching at Hanoi International School and she is currently the ELS teacher. She feels very privileged to be part of the HIS staff and the learning journey of the students she teaches.

Adam Lee

Athletics

Adam has been a PE Teacher for 12 years now and continues to teach PYP PE, he is also the Athletic Director. Adam was trained in England and studied at Chelsea School, Eastbourne. After three years teaching in the UK Adam embarked on his overseas teaching adventure, fulfilling a desire to live and work abroad. Adam began in Istanbul, Turkey, where he met his partner Lisa and where their son Eden was born. From there Adam moved to Kazakhstan and is now in his fifth year at HIS.  Adam enjoys football and tennis in his spare time and travelling with his son, daughter and partner.
